At The Bridges at Mission, where compassionate Assisted Living meets specialized Alzheimer’s support, we’re inspired by groundbreaking research that aligns with our mission to redefine memory care. A recent UC San Diego study leveraged artificial intelligence (AI) to uncover a novel cause of Alzheimer’s disease discovery that could pave the way for innovative therapies and deepen our understanding of personalized care.
How AI Unlocked a Key Alzheimer’s Mystery
Researchers identified the gene PHGDH as a driver of Alzheimer’s through its previously unknown “moonlighting” role in disrupting cellular gene regulation. Using AI-powered 3D modeling, the team visualized how PHGDH activates pathways leading to amyloid plaque formation, a hallmark of the disease. This finding highlights the potential of AI Alzheimer’s research to reveal upstream targets for early intervention, offering hope for therapies that prevent rather than react to symptoms.
A Therapeutic Candidate with Promise
The study also identified NCT-503, a small-molecule inhibitor that blocks PHGDH’s harmful regulatory role. In mouse models, this compound improved memory and reduced anxiety, key challenges for Alzheimer’s patients. At The Bridges, we recognize the importance of such advancements, mirroring our commitment to technology-driven engagement through tools like the IN2L cognitive stimulation system.
